Amsterdam (Netherlands) is taking decisive action to alleviate the strain of over-tourism by significantly reducing the number of river boat cruises permitted to dock in the city. As part of a comprehensive plan comprising "a hundred" measures, the city aims to curtail the influx of cruise ships to its waterfront. The cruise port of Amsterdam is also a popular homeport (passengers embark and disembark in Amsterdam) for several cruise lines, including river cruises (Viking River Cruises, AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways…). There are 100 cruises to choose from, that range in length from 5 days up to 16 days.

Amsterdam boasts 17th-century buildings, art galleries celebrating Van Gogh and Rembrandt, and the most significant historical site; the Anne Frank House. The city of Utrecht is also full of historical treasures, including the iconic Dom Tower and the medieval Oudegracht Canal. With so many sites to see and places to visit, our Netherlands cruises will leave you wanting to come back for more. Enjoy a warm welcome in our birthplace, on a Holland America Line cruise of the Netherlands.

Anne Frank House is located a 20-minute walk from Central Station. Alternatively, you can take a tram 13 or 17 to Westermarkt stop. Due to the popularity of this site and limited capacity, you should consider pre-purchasing your tickets online. Unfortunately, in 1944 all eight of them were captured and sent to the concentration camp. The museum features personal objects of the people who hid in the house annex, including Anne’s diary.

SEATTLE, April 17, 2024 /CNW/ -- Holland America Line is debuting "Glacier Day" on its Alaska cruises as it rolls out new programming within its "We Love Alaska" on board experience.
Holland America Line remains the only cruise line that offers overland tours to the Yukon combined with an Alaska cruise and Denali experience. In addition to curbing river boat cruises, Amsterdam has initiated the second phase of its "stay away" campaign, aimed at discouraging budget tourists who visit the city primarily for recreational drug use. The city has also raised tourist taxes to some of the highest levels globally. New Exclusive 'Killer Whale Pale Ale' Available On BoardHolland America Line is debuting a new "Killer Whale Pale Ale" on all Alaska cruises. The beer was produced in collaboration with Pike Brewing – Seattle's oldest craft brewery – and features notes of honey, citrus and tropical fruits. The label artwork was created in collaboration with Native Artist Rico Worl, a member of the Tlingit and Athabascan community, who also designed the Native artwork featured on the Alaska menus. The Killer Whale Pale Ale label represents the food chain in the Pacific Northwest, with a seal deftly maneuvering out of the grasp of a killer whale. Furthermore, research examining the impact of ocean-going cruises is underway, with findings expected to be published before summer. These findings will inform potential measures to reduce the impact of such cruises on Amsterdam's tourism landscape.
Take a trip to the most popular attraction located in the north of the capital, approximately 18 km/11 miles (a 25-minute drive) from the cruise port Amsterdam. The best way to explore it is by foot or bicycle due to its narrow alleys. Here you can find selected museums, small cafes, souvenir shops and of course the famous ¨coffee shops¨ and red light window shops. Visit the only Museum with a road inside of it but not for cars, only for bicycles.
The Rijksmuseum features almost one million objects but only 8000 pieces of artwork are displayed including several of Rembrandt’s portraits and his famous “Night Watch”. The second floor houses the largest library in the Netherlands. Port Amsterdam’s main cruise port terminal is known as Passenger Terminal Amsterdam, located within walking distance from Amsterdam downtown.
Ships may also dock at Felison Cruise Terminal located in the town of IJmuiden approximately 30 km (18.6 miles) from Amsterdam, but this rarely happens (check the cruise calendar). Begin your journey on a short cruise to Amsterdam, the capital city and away from the countryside, known for its iconic canals, world-class museums, and vibrant nightlife. Take a stroll through the colourful streets of the Jordaan district, browse the bustling markets, or sample traditional Dutch delicacies like stroopwafels and bitterballen. As for a tipple or two, you can't go to the Netherlands without having an Amstel or Heineken.
